In the first round of the Bundesliga, Dortmund sent four zero-zero youngsters, Bellingham played midfield, and Renner played the role of a midfielder behind the two forwards Harland and Sancho. Despite the outstanding performance of the teenagers, Dortmund director Zork emphasized the importance of veteran Witsel in the midfield in an interview.
In the last game against Borussia, 30 minutes before the opening, Bellingham and Renner were disadvantaged in physical confrontation and often lost the ball. Of course, the team’s goal to break the deadlock was made by these two teenagers.
In the first two games of the new season, Reina and Bellingham performed well on the offensive end and were able to directly participate in scoring. Zork said: "Without the support of an experienced midfielder like Witsel, Reina and Bellingham would not be able to gain their current degree of freedom as they move forward."
Witsel joined Dortmund in the summer of 2018 for 20 million euros. He is currently a member of the team's team committee.
